So you recycle, you turn the lights off when you leave the room, you compost, you don’t idle your car and you take shorter showers. If everyone follows your example, would that fix the environmental problems of the world? Derrick Jensen’s essay makes a convincing case that without political and legal change, personal change means little.

Great essay. Thanks for pointing it out Yaacov.
I actually ranted about this a bit back in June, but not nearly as succinctly: http://blog.jasonhanley.com/2009/06/conservation-or-economics.html
I like your post, Jason! There’s a terrific book called Life, Money and Illusion by Mike Nickerson that goes into more detail about the ideas raised in the essay and your blog post. It talks about what policy changes we need to make in order to get there. I liked it so much I bought twenty copies to give away. I’d be happy to send you one if you drop me your address via email. The book, interestingly, was funded by IDRC. I am repeatedly pleasantly surprised by certain pieces of our federal government.
